Uzbekistan Breaks the 10 Billion kWh Mark in "Green" Energy

The country is accelerating its transition to renewable energy sources (RES)

Uzbekistan has reached a record level of "green" electricity production for the first time: according to the Ministry of Energy, in the evening of December 8, the total output of solar and wind power plants reached 10 billion kWh. The total capacity of existing RES facilities already exceeds 5.5 thousand MW, and the total volume of "clean" energy since the beginning of the year, together with hydroelectric power plants, amounted to 16 billion kWh — this is enough to provide electricity to about 6.6 million households.

The growth in generation allowed the country to save 2.7 billion cubic meters of gas and avoid the emission of 4.4 million tons of pollutants. The Ministry of Energy notes that the dynamics fully correspond to the priorities outlined by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev at the recent conference "Sustainable Energy — a Reliable Step of New Uzbekistan into the Future." In the last month and a half alone, production volume has grown by an additional billion kilowatt-hours, and the president has launched 42 energy projects worth $11 billion and the construction of another 21 facilities.

According to the head of state, these initiatives should ensure a stable energy supply and already increase the share of "green" generation to 30%. The strategic goal is to introduce more than 17 thousand MW of new RES capacities by 2030 and increase the share of renewable energy in the country's energy balance to 54%, which will turn Uzbekistan into one of the regional leaders in the development of sustainable energy.
