Masdar Accelerates in Uzbekistan: "Green" Projects Already at 2 GW and $2 Billion

The UAE-based company is betting on solar, wind, and energy storage

Masdar, a UAE-based company, is actively increasing its presence in Uzbekistan, expanding its portfolio of renewable energy projects. According to Maryam Al Mazrouei, Head of Business Development for Masdar in the CIS, the company's journey in the country began in 2018 with a 100 MW solar power plant in the Navoi region. Today, the installed capacity of projects has grown to 2 GW, and total investments exceed $2 billion.

In the near future, Masdar plans to begin construction of a solar power plant in Guzar with the integration of an energy storage system. Agreements have also been signed for the creation of a 600 MWh autonomous battery station, and a possible second phase of the project is being discussed with the Ministry of Energy of Uzbekistan. Simultaneously, the company is studying a 1 GW wind project in Mingbulak and intends to adapt the model of round-the-clock "green" generation already used in the UAE.

Masdar emphasizes that it is focused on generation, not export logistics, but is ready to support the "Central Asia – EU Green Energy Corridor" project if requested by the authorities. According to Al Mazrouei, the key challenge today is the integration of solar, wind, and hydropower into a single system, where battery storage plays an important role. Uzbekistan's goal is to increase the share of renewable energy to 54% by 2030, and Masdar expects to make a significant contribution to this.
