Uzbekistan Shifts Defense to AI, Drones, and Satellite Communications

Mirziyoyev Approves Army Digitalization and Military Education Reforms

Uzbekistan has approved a large-scale package of measures for the digital transformation of its army and the renewal of its military education system. President Shavkat Mirziyoyev endorsed initiatives aimed at modernizing the defense sector and implementing modern troop management technologies.

As part of the reform, the army is adapting to new types of armed conflicts where drones, robotic systems, and electronic warfare assets are actively used. Specialized units for operating drones, as well as for countering them, have already been established. Simultaneously, training for unmanned system operators, engineers, and robotics specialists is being developed.

Significant changes have also affected military education: a University of Military Security and Defense has been established, curricula have been updated, and a multi-level system for training commanders has been introduced. The focus is on studying AI, foreign languages, and digital technologies. The army is implementing electronic control systems, secure communication channels, cybersecurity, as well as projects like the digital "Conscription," which has already moved dozens of public services online and fully digitized the mobilization process.
