Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Tajikistan Agree on Water: Bakhri-Tojik Operating Regime Approved for Summer

The three countries have coordinated the reservoir's schedule, which is crucial for irrigation during the dry season

Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan have agreed on the operating regime for the "Bakhri-Tojik" reservoir for the period from June to August 2026. The corresponding trilateral protocol was signed following negotiations between the water ministers of the three countries, solidifying the parameters for water resource distribution during the summer season.

The main goal of the agreements is to ensure stable water supply to the agricultural regions of southern Kazakhstan, where irrigation demand sharply increases during the summer months. This primarily concerns the Maktaaral and Zhetysai districts of Turkestan Region, for which timely water supply is critically important during agricultural work.

The parties emphasized that water resource management remains one of the key areas of regional cooperation in Central Asia. The decisions made are seen as a result of coordination and mutual support, as well as a step towards more sustainable and coordinated use of transboundary water systems.
