Uzbekistan Prepares 1.4 GW Coal Power Project in Angren

A new thermal power plant based on a large deposit is set to strengthen the energy system and reduce gas consumption

A 1.4 GW coal-fired thermal power plant is planned for construction in Angren, which will operate based on the Nishbosh deposit with coal reserves of approximately 233 million tons. The project was reviewed by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev as part of discussions on the development of the coal industry and new investments in the country's energy sector.

The plant will include four power units of 350 MW each and will utilize ultra-supercritical efficiency technologies. The total investment is estimated at $1.3 billion, and annual electricity generation could reach 9.8 billion kWh, which will reduce natural gas consumption by approximately 2 billion cubic meters per year.

Concurrently, coal mining development is planned at the Nishbosh deposit with investments of approximately $494 million and a volume of up to 10 million tons per year. The project will create new jobs during the construction and operation phases and will be part of a broader program of localization and reform of the coal industry, including the abolition of state price regulation for coal from June 1.
