Uzbekistan Prepares to Ban Social Media for Teenagers Under 16: New Bill Under Discussion

Authorities plan to introduce strict regulation of the digital environment for minors, based on international experience

The Ministry of Preschool and School Education of Uzbekistan is considering introducing serious restrictions on social media use by teenagers. This involves the preparation of a bill that could prohibit access to popular platforms for children under 16.

The initiative was announced by the head of the department, E'zozkhon Karimova, who noted that the goal of the reform is not to completely restrict access to digital technologies, but to create a safe environment and strict rules for their use by minors.

According to the minister, the country has already taken administrative control measures in schools, including restricting the use of mobile phones during the educational process. However, practice has shown mixed results, which prompted the authorities to develop more stringent and systemic regulation.

It is noted that the future bill is being discussed with deputies and senators, and after its preparation is completed, it will be submitted for public discussion. The authorities emphasize that international experience, including similar restrictions in a number of other countries, is being taken into account in the development of the document.
