Uzbekistanis sharply increased currency exchange: turnover reached $19 billion in six months

The population sold almost twice as much currency to banks as it bought, and the share of digital operations continues to grow

In Uzbekistan, the population's activity in the foreign exchange market has significantly increased. From January to June 2026, the total turnover of banks' operations with individuals reached $19.1 billion — 31%, or $4.5 billion, more than a year earlier.

Banks acquired $12.3 billion in foreign currency from citizens, increasing the volume of such operations by 35%. Currency sales to the population grew by 26% and amounted to $6.8 billion. Thus, the net supply of foreign currency from individuals reached $5.5 billion, compared to $3.7 billion a year earlier.

Most operations still occur at traditional exchange offices — $11.2 billion, or 59% of the total turnover. Another $7.5 billion came from remote services, and currency ATMs accounted for $404 million. At the same time, the volume of operations through ATMs increased by 61%.

The Central Bank attributes the increased activity in digital channels to the expansion of public access to online banking and 24/7 financial services. The share of online operations slightly decreased over the year — from 41% to 39%, but their absolute volume continued to grow. The net currency supply by the population increased its share in the total turnover from 26% to 29%.
