For the first time in the country's history, the National Medical Center of Uzbekistan successfully performed a simultaneous liver and kidney transplant on a single patient. The operation was performed on a woman from Samarkand region who suffered from severe liver disease and end-stage chronic renal failure.

The patient, Nasiba Mukhammadieva, had been treated for liver disease for several years, and for the past four years, she had to undergo regular hemodialysis. According to doctors, she had completely lost independent urination. After suffering from viral hepatitis C, the woman also developed liver cirrhosis.

The family tried to raise money for treatment on their own, selling property and even putting their house up for sale. Relatives were advised to undergo transplantation abroad, but the costs of the operation, donor travel, and accompanying persons proved too high.

After contacting the National Medical Center, specialists concluded that transplanting only one organ would not solve the problem. Therefore, it was decided to perform two transplants at once.

The operation was successful. Transplant surgeon Jasur Sobirov called it the first successful case in the history of Uzbek medicine of simultaneous liver and kidney transplantation to a single patient. According to him, such an intervention is an extremely complex surgical procedure.
