Andijan International Airport in Uzbekistan is undergoing a large-scale reconstruction, after which its annual capacity is expected to increase to 3.5 million passengers. The country's president, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, familiarized himself with the progress of the work. The total cost of the project is estimated at 1.1 trillion soums. In the first stage, the airfield infrastructure was modernized: the runway was extended to 3.3 km, a new 60-meter wide runway of category 4E was built, and taxiways and parking spaces for 10 aircraft were equipped.
The airport received a new German-made lighting system, which allows it to receive aircraft at night and in dense fog, including with visibility up to 300 m. The updated infrastructure is also designed to serve large wide-body airliners. The second stage of the project is currently underway – the construction of a two-story terminal with an area of 19,685 sq. m.
The new terminal will increase capacity from the current 200 to 1000 passengers per hour. The building will feature high-speed Wi-Fi and intelligent services. Currently, seven airlines operate regular flights from Andijan, and their number is planned to increase from 808 to 2500 per year. The authorities expect that the modernization will enhance the region's transport accessibility and provide additional impetus to its tourism and economic development.
