Yandex Maps and Navigator learned to adjust routes to driver habits

Navigation analyzes trip history and user behavior to offer not only the fastest route, but also familiar, simple, or convenient options

Yandex Maps and Yandex Navigator have started forming personalized routes taking into account individual driver habits. When building a route, the system analyzes the trip history and user behavior, after which it can offer the most suitable option — from fast to familiar or less complex.

Personalization works based on machine learning. The model evaluates routes calculated by the navigation system, as well as aggregated trip data: how often the driver deviates from recommendations, which roads they choose, and what distances they usually travel. Depending on the situation, more than ten types of routes are available. For example, a novice driver might prefer the “Simple” option with fewer interchanges and maneuvers, while for regular trips, a “Familiar” route might be suitable.

Among other options available are “Fast”, “Short”, “Optimal”, “Through the center”, “Bypass” and “No traffic jams”. The first minimizes travel time, the second — distance, and “Optimal” takes into account several factors at once. You can choose the suggested options from the car screen when using Yandex Maps and Yandex Navigator via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.
