Uzbekistan creates national climate service system with UN support

The climate services development plan is designed for four years

In Uzbekistan, with the support of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Green Climate Fund, the National Framework for Climate Services is being implemented. An action plan for its implementation and a business model for Uzhydromet's climate services have already been prepared. These documents were discussed with potential recipients of such services. The next step will be the approval of the plan and its execution, which is designed for a period of up to four years.

Hydrometeorological data are becoming increasingly in demand not only among specialized professionals but also among government agencies, insurance companies, businesses, and the public. According to Uzhydromet, in 2025, 48 requests were received from insurance companies, 19 from the Ministry of Emergency Situations, 12 from the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and another 132 from other organizations. In the first half of 2026, insurers sent 68 requests – more than in the entire previous year.

During the same period, Uzhydromet received four requests from the Ministry of Emergency Situations and 74 inquiries from other organizations. The National Framework for Climate Services is an initiative of the World Meteorological Organization aimed at developing national systems for providing climate information. In Uzbekistan, its implementation should help organize climate services taking into account the needs of government agencies, the insurance sector, businesses, and citizens.
