The Syrdarya-2 combined-cycle power plant with a capacity of about 1.6 GW is expected to start strengthening Uzbekistan's energy system during the winter season. This was announced on October 16 by Cedric Lebouch, Executive Vice President of the French EDF, at a meeting between President Shavkat Mirziyoyev and investors. The facility is located in the Syrdarya region, and its estimated annual output is 13 billion kWh.
The project, worth about $900 million, is being implemented by a consortium of EDF, Qatar's Nebras Power, and Japan's Sojitz and Kyuden. The launch ceremony took place on August 25, 2026, but on September 25, during testing, an emergency power outage of 1600 MW occurred, causing power supply disruptions in several regions. Reserve stations and energy storage systems were used to restore electricity supply. According to calculations, the facility's efficiency reaches 61.7%, and gas savings could amount to about 1.1 billion cubic meters per year.
EDF also reported on other projects in Uzbekistan. 75% of the work has been completed on the construction of a 1600 MW combined-cycle power plant in the Surkhandarya region. In addition, the company agreed with Eolus on a 500 MW wind power plant project in the Bukhara region with an energy storage system. EDF is also ready to participate in the modernization of power grids under public-private partnership conditions, as well as in the training of energy specialists.
