Uzbekistan to build 5,000 km of power grids and increase energy storage to 4.5 GW

The Fergana Valley depends on electricity supplies from other regions where surplus capacities are concentrated

Fergana, Andijan, and Namangan regions are partially supplied with electricity generated in other regions of Uzbekistan. At the same time, the launch of new industrial zones and enterprises will increase the load on local grids. President Shavkat Mirziyoyev spoke about the problem on October 16 at a meeting with energy sector investors.

Previously, new power plants were mainly located where investors proposed. This accelerated the development of renewable energy but led to an excess of generation in certain areas and additional costs for electricity transmission. Now, the authorities intend to coordinate the placement of power plants with grid capabilities and regional demand. By March 1, 2027, a map of available connections is planned to be presented, and generation, transmission, and energy storage projects will be considered comprehensively.

By 2030, Uzbekistan plans to build 5,000 km of power grids and 16 large substations, and increase the capacity of energy storage systems to 4.5 GW. The main projects will affect Karakalpakstan, Bukhara, Jizzakh, Samarkand, Namangan, Kashkadarya, and Tashkent regions. It is also planned to expand the participation of private companies in distribution networks to reduce losses and improve customer service.
