Uzbekistan is accelerating the transition to a "green" economy and expects to achieve carbon neutrality by 2055. The authorities are focusing on reducing emissions, developing renewable energy sources, and offsetting greenhouse gases through natural ecosystems. These measures should not only improve the environment but also maintain sustainable economic growth.
The Ministry of Economy and Finance, together with the World Bank, presented a report "Possible Paths and Scenarios for Long-Term Low-Carbon Development." The document describes the key mechanisms for transforming the economy, the necessary investments and priority sectors, as well as approaches to attracting private and international financing without compromising the development of key sectors.
According to calculations, even if climate goals are achieved, the country's economy will be able to grow by about 5% per year. By 2060, the share of renewable energy sources could reach 60%, and dependence on imports will decrease to 39% instead of more than 70% without reforms. The transition to a "green" model can create up to 1.8 million jobs, and improving air quality can reduce mortality from pollution by 18% by 2030.
