The First Nuclear Power Plant in Uzbekistan is Getting Closer: Project Discussed with IAEA Head

In 2026, experts will check the site preparation and the progress of the nuclear program

Director of the Uzatom Agency Azim Akhmedkhadjaev held a meeting with IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi, where the parties discussed the development of cooperation and the implementation of the roadmap for the peaceful use of atomic energy. During the negotiations, it was noted that Uzbekistan is actively forming a national nuclear infrastructure and developing the industry in accordance with international standards.

A separate topic was the preparation for the follow-up INIR mission, scheduled for the second half of 2026. Agency experts plan to assess the progress of the construction project of the first nuclear power plant in the Jizzakh Region. According to Grossi, preparations for the mission are proceeding at a high level and will become an important stage in the development of the country's nuclear program.

The parties also discussed the practical phase of the project — the start of concrete works at the site of the future nuclear power plant in the Farish District. The IAEA confirmed its readiness to continue supporting the project and expressed interest in expanding the participation of Uzbek specialists in the agency's work.
