Uzbekistan Sharply Tightens Penalties for Illegal Connections to Power Grids

Interference with meters and unauthorized connection now face heavy fines and arrest

President Shavkat Mirziyoyev has signed a law strengthening liability for illegal connections to public utility networks in Uzbekistan. The document provides for amendments to administrative and criminal legislation and is aimed at combating unauthorized connection to electrical, gas, heating and water supply systems.

According to the new rules, the fine for citizens for illegal connection or interference with the operation of meters has been increased to 15–20 basic calculation units, which is approximately 6.18–8.24 million soums. For officials, sanctions have increased to 25–30 BCU, or 10.3–12.36 million soums.

If such violations are committed for commercial purposes, the fine can reach 25 BCU, and administrative arrest for up to 15 days is also possible. Repeated violations are transferred to the criminal sphere: the fine increases to 30–75 BCU, and community service for up to 240 hours or correctional labor for up to 1 year may also be assigned.
