Electricity production continues to grow in Uzbekistan, but the main changes are occurring within the industry itself.
According to the National Statistics Committee, 29.86 billion kWh of electricity were generated in the country from January to April 2026. This is 3.1% more than a year earlier and almost 8% higher than in 2024. At the same time, the generation structure is rapidly changing: the share of large enterprises is decreasing, while small businesses are showing record growth rates.
Large electricity producers have significantly reduced their output over the past 2 years. If in 2024 they produced 25.87 billion kWh, in 2026 this figure decreased to 20.53 billion kWh. The decline was more than 20%. A similar situation is observed in the thermal energy segment: production volumes decreased by almost 26% in 2 years.
Against this background, small businesses have effectively made an energy breakthrough. Electricity generation by small enterprises increased more than 5-fold – from 1.85 billion kWh in 2024 to 9.33 billion kWh in 2026. The share of small businesses in total generation increased from 6.7% to 31.2%. Currently, every third kilowatt-hour in the country is produced by small businesses, making them one of the key drivers of Uzbekistan's energy market.
