150 km/h between Tashkent and Samarkand: Uzbekistan prepares mega-highway of the future

The new concrete highway with an intelligent control system is set to become one of the country's largest road construction projects

The President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, reviewed the project for large-scale development of Uzbekistan's transport infrastructure.

One of the key facilities will be the new alternative Tashkent-Samarkand highway, with a length of 282 km. The route will connect Tashkent, Sirdaryo, Jizzakh, and Samarkand regions and is expected to significantly reduce travel time between the country's largest cities.

The project envisages the construction of a modern I-a category highway with cement-concrete pavement and 3 lanes in each direction. The estimated speed will be up to 150 km/h. The project also plans for the construction of 12 interchanges, 91 bridges, 60 tunnel crossings, 16 overpasses, and hundreds of drainage structures.

Special attention will be paid to the digitalization of the highway. An intelligent transport system and weigh stations will be implemented on the road, and 12 terminals and roadside infrastructure facilities will appear along the route. The President instructed to accelerate negotiations with potential investors and to start the construction of the new highway as quickly as possible.
