Local Train Passenger Traffic to More Than Double by 2030

Authorities are betting on electric trains, new routes, and high-speed connections between regions

In late December 2025, a decision was made that should radically change the situation with local rail transportation. The document envisages a sharp increase in passenger traffic on domestic routes, expansion of the electric train network, and the introduction of higher standards of service quality by 2030.

The key goal of the program is to increase the number of passengers on local routes from 10.5 to 23.5 million people per year. In parallel, it is planned to expand the geography of electric train traffic: the number of routes should increase from 40 to 53. Special attention is paid to updating infrastructure and increasing the speed and comfort of travel.

Among the priorities is the modernization of the Angren–Pap and Toshguzar–Boysun–Kumkurgan sections. After completion of the work, it is planned to launch high-speed electric trains in the Fergana Valley and Surkhandarya region. From 2026, high-speed traffic will also appear on the fully electrified Bukhara–Khiva line, which is 465 km long, and the electrification of the Miskin–Nukus section will be completed by the end of 2026. It is expected that these measures will strengthen interregional ties and give a new impetus to the development of domestic tourism.
