Subcompact cars will become more expensive: import duties on foreign cars have risen sharply in Uzbekistan

The preferential regime has ended, rates have returned to their previous levels and hit the most affordable models

Starting from January 1, 2026, import customs duties on passenger cars with engine displacement up to 1,200 cc increased in Uzbekistan. The reason is the expiration of the reduced rates, which had been in effect for about 2.5 years and were introduced to support competition and expand the supply of affordable cars on the market.

The benefits had been in effect since July 17, 2023 and applied to new cars no more than one year old. During this period, imports of cars with engines up to 1,000 cc were subject to a zero duty, while cars with engines up to 1,200 cc were subject to a 5% rate. At the time, the authorities emphasized that the measure was aimed at lowering prices and increasing the affordability of passenger cars for the public.

The benefits were not extended, and from the beginning of 2026 the duties returned to their previous levels. Now, when importing cars with engines up to 1,000 cc, a 15% customs duty plus $0.4 for each cubic centimeter is charged, and for cars with displacement up to 1,200 cc, 15% and $0.6 per cubic centimeter. This will directly increase the cost of popular subcompact models on the Uzbek market.
