On February 9, 2026, the government of Uzbekistan approved a resolution to establish the Republican Center for Radioactive Waste Storage. It is being formed on the basis of the existing disposal site at the Institute of Nuclear Physics and will receive the status of a single specialized state institution in the country.
The Center will provide a full range of services for the management of RAW: organizing specialized transportation, acceptance, sorting, processing, and safe long-term storage of materials. This refers to waste generated during the operation of radiation sources of both domestic and foreign origin, including those decommissioned and with expired service lives.
In addition to practical work, the institution will develop modern technologies for handling radioactive materials, conduct scientific research, and implement digital data exchange systems with government bodies. Authorities expect that the launch of the center will increase the level of nuclear and radiation safety and strengthen the country's scientific and technical potential.
