According to the National Statistics Committee, as of the beginning of the 2025/2026 academic year, there are 215 higher education institutions operating in Uzbekistan. Compared to the previous year, their number has decreased by seven, but the system's structure remains quite diverse, including both state and private universities.
Out of the total, 97 institutions belong to the non-state sector, reflecting the sustainable development of private higher education in the country. At the same time, the highest concentration of universities remains in Tashkent, where 98 organizations are located – almost half of the total number.
In terms of regions, after the capital, Tashkent Region follows (19 universities) and Samarkand Region (14). Next are the Republic of Karakalpakstan and Bukhara Region (11 each), Andijan, Kashkadarya, and Fergana Regions (9 each), Surkhandarya and Khorezm (8 each), Namangan (6), Jizzakh and Navoi (5 each). The lowest indicator is recorded in Syrdarya Region, where 3 higher education institutions operate.
