Yandex Maps has introduced a new type of pedestrian route in Tashkent — the "Green" route. Uzbekistan is the first country where this option has become available. When selecting this option, the service suggests a path that goes through areas with a large number of trees and potentially shaded sections.

To build the route, the algorithm analyzes several factors: path length, number of open spaces, density of tree canopy coverage, average temperature, and alternation of sunny and shaded areas.

To assess the level of greenery in the capital of Uzbekistan, Yandex Maps specialists created a digital map of Tashkent's trees. For this, a neural network processed satellite images of the city and determined the location and area of tree canopies.

According to the company, the system can analyze a satellite image of an area up to 100 km² in one to two minutes and find areas covered with vegetation. The recognition accuracy on test data was about 90%.

The obtained information was combined with data on pedestrian streets, paths, and crossings. Now users can choose a "Green" route when planning a trip to the metro, public transport stops, or during regular walks.

The company notes that digital assessment of green zones helps to consider the impact of urban vegetation on pedestrian comfort. Such data can also be used to analyze the state of the urban environment and plan the further development of green infrastructure.
